From matrices to the Matrix

I really ought to have written this myself. I headed the R&D group at the main visual effects companies to work on the Matrix movies and I spent much of my time working with matrices. Whether they were simple 4x4 matrices for geometric transformations to sparse NxN matrices built from discretising the Navier-Stokes equation, the whole Matrix was built on matrices.
